If Malaysia's Islamic opposition party has its way, Avril Lavigne won't be starting her Asia tour in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 29.
According to them, Lavigne's dance moves are too sexy for Malaysian youths, so they're trying to get the government to cancel her Aug 29th concert.
"It is considered too sexy for us. ... It's not good for viewers in Malaysia," said Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party official. "We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models."
Update 8/19/2008:
Lavigne's Kuala Lumpur show has been cancelled.
Update 8/20/2008:
There's still some sorting out to do for both sides.
The government wants the show promoters to select another date further away from the country's independence day celebration.
"We did not reject the concert. We asked them to find another date as the original date is so close to the independence day. That's the only reason," explained a cultural ministry official.
But the concert's cancellation is news to the show promoters.
"As far as we are concerned, the show is still on," a concert spokesman told Reuters.
As of this writing, people can still buy tickets to the August 29 concert in Kuala Lumpur.
Update 8/25/2008:
The government relented and the show can go forward.
