19 years is a lot time to spend out of the public consciousness, but Superman did just that. Hoping to cash in on the resurgence of superhero movies, Warner Bros commissioned his reappearance in the 2006 movie "Superman Returns."
Unfortunately, the numbers from the box office left WB executives decidedly under whelmed. The movie made a little more than what it had cost to make, and the studio had a decision to make.
What to do for the sequel? Should there even be a sequel?
Yes, there will be, according to Variety's Anne Thompson. There's just too much upside that it doesn't make sense to not have one. The question is where to go from here.
Here's a snippet of what Thompson wrote in her blog,
"Today I was told that it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project. There are no writers working on a Superman script now. The studio wants to figure it out. 'It might be better to start from scratch,' one exec admitted."
