Jade Ray, a 14-year-old former Mount Miguel High School freshman, is suing the Grossmont Union High School District for $75,000 for pain and humiliation suffered when her then choir teacher, Heather Hargett, called her "ugly" and a "brat" in front of 50 other students and then proceeded to physically kicked her out of the room.
According the the San Diego Union Tribune, the issue arose when Ray asked Hargett why she was excluded from the Valentine's Day choir. Hargett answered that Ray "looked bad" and didn't have the required choir T-shirt. When Ray questioned the $15 cost of the T-shirt, it was then Hargett verbally abused her and kicked her in the buttocks, asking Ray to leave.
Ray's lawyer said he wanted to settle with the school district for $75,000, but the district refused and is now asking for a jury trial.
