Katherine Gunther was performing a ceremony at  the Oak Hill Cemetery, located 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis, when she pierced her left foot with a 36-inch sword last Saturday. She was aiming for the ground.

"It wasn't the first time I performed the ritual, but it was the first time I put a sword through my foot," she told the Indianapolis Star.

The reason for the ceremony? Giving thanks for a recent run of good luck.
